Rip a DVD in Ubuntu easily with DVD::Rip
August 3rd, 2008 at 5:59 pm by David Branco; 3 months, 2 weeks agoA few days ago I wanted to rip a few DVD’s I had to avi files on my computer, not knowing how I did some searching and decided to share my method.
Install dvd::rip using the command "sudo apt-get install dvdrip".
The first time you load the program, you will be presented with a one-time configuration screen. Enter in the appropriate paths for each of the fields and continue.
Once the configuration is done, you’ll be presented with the "storage" tab of the program. Simply enter in a project name and click "create project". Once created, click on the "rip title" tab. The program usually picks the correct title of the DVD automatically, if not select the correct title. Click rip.
With your DVD now ripped, it’s time to click the "transcode" tab. This tab is where DVD::Rip will compress your DVD and convert it into a .avi file. Personally I change the mp3 bitrate to 96kb/s and make the target media one 700mb file.
Note: Be sure to leave the 2-pass encoding option active. How 2-pass encoding works is on the first pass it will store the information about each frame and then the secound pass will predict movements and greatly smoothen the presentation.
